Mimon
Mimon
Mimon is a disused Soviet Army base, that at the time of its peak was one of the largest in the Czech Republic. When the Soviet Army left in 1992 it became abandoned. Lenka and Wayne heard about Mimon from a family member, who is a hang-glider pilot and uses the army airport there. In December 2007 they went on their first visit to Mimon.
The airport is surrounded by vast armored aeroplane hangers which housed Mig fighter jets. There are also several other large aviation buildings in this part of the military base. Within the base is a small residential area with abandoned apartment blocks where soldiers and their families lived. The interiors of these apartments are completely gutted, Soviet families left little and scavengers have long since pillaged anything else of value. All that remains are countless varieties of wallpaper left on the walls, glimpses of personal choice in an otherwise impersonal place. Layers of different wallpaper applied over a period of 20 years reveal the different personal tastes of each resident. Here is where Wayne and Lenka decided to start their documentary on Mimon.
